Ingredients

  • 1 egg large, for the egg mixture
  • 2 tablespoons skim milk or preferred milk
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or coconut sugar, for sweetness
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger adds warmth and spice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon for the classic French toast flavor
  • ½ teaspoon allspice adds a subtle spiced note
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves for a deep, aromatic flavor
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract for added flavor
  • 8 slices sandwich bread crusts removed, use sourdough for best results
  • 4 tablespoons Nutella or any hazelnut chocolate/cacao spread, divided
  • ½ cup strawberries sliced, small pieces
  • 1 pinch icing sugar for dusting, optional
  • 4 tablespoons cinnamon sugar optional, for extra sweetness
  • ½ teaspoon butter for greasing the pan

Method

  1. Whisk the egg, milk, and vanilla together in a medium-sized shallow bowl until well combined. prep
  2. If the bread slices are too thick, gently roll them out to flatten. Be careful not to press too hard. prep
  3. Spread ½ tablespoon of Nutella onto each slice of bread. Fill with a third of the strawberries and roll tightly, starting from the berry side. Seal seam side down. Repeat for all slices. assemble
  4. Heat a non-stick pan on low-medium heat and grease it with butter or cooking spray. prep
  5. Dip each roll into the egg mixture, turning to coat evenly. Place them seam side down in the pan and cook, turning every 2-3 minutes until golden brown on all sides. cook
  6. Once golden brown, remove from the pan and dust with icing sugar or roll them in cinnamon sugar for extra sweetness. finish
