Ingredients
  

  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil For sautéing vegetables
  • 2 shallots chopped (Adds sweetness and depth of flavor)

  • 1 red bell pepper thinly sliced (Adds color and crunch)

  • ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce For saltiness and umami

  • 2 or 3 Tablespoons chili paste with garlic Adjust to taste for heat
  • ¾ cup low-sodium beef broth Helps to create the sauce base

  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch For thickening the sauce
  • 1.5 cups holy basil leaves chopped (Essential for authentic flavor, can substitute Thai basil)
  • 3 green onions chopped (For garnish and added freshness)
  • 5 cups hot cooked rice Use any rice variety or substitute with lettuce wraps for low-carb

Method
 

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. prep
  2. Add the chopped shallots, minced garlic, ginger, and sliced red bell pepper. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened. prep
  3. Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Break it up into small pieces as it cooks. (Using a meat chopper helps break up the beef evenly.) prep
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together brown sugar, fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, chili paste, cornstarch, beef broth, and water. Pour this sauce mixture into the pan. mix
  5. Allow the sauce to simmer for 5-10 minutes until it thickens and the flavors meld together. simmer
  6. Serve the Thai basil beef over hot cooked rice, garnished with chopped green onions. finish
